DOULA FAQ
What is a birth doula?
A birth doula is a trained professional caregiver who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support throughout the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum process. They educate, advocate, and hold space for birthing persons and their partners/family to facilitate an empowering and positive birthing experience.
What is a birth doula's impact on healthy birth outcomes?
⋇ Higher reported rate of birth experience satisfaction
⋇ Higher rate of breastfeeding initiation
⋇ Decreased rate of postpartum depression or anxiety
⋇ More likely to go into spontaneous (self-induced) labor
⋇ Reduced incidence of intervention
⋇ Significantly lower rates of unplanned cesarean birth
What is the difference between a midwife and a doula?
While midwives and doulas often work together, they are not interchangeable and work under separate scopes of practice. A midwife is a licensed healthcare professional who provides comprehensive medical care during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum, including performing clinical tasks and delivering babies. A doula is a non-medical, trained professional birth worker who offers emotional support, education, and physical comfort measures during childbirth.
A doula does:
⋇ Provide prenatal + postpartum education
⋇ Give emotional and physical support before, during, and after labor
⋇ Shares comfort measures, positions and laboring techniques
⋇ Supports the birthing person's birth plan and decisions
⋇ Advocates for birthing persons throughout pregnancy, labor, and postpartum
⋇ Provides a positive space for birthing persons & their partners
⋇ Provides lactation support
A doula does not:
⋇ Perform medical procedures (i.e. vaginal exams, fetal heart monitoring, etc.)
⋇ Make decisions for you, especially medical decisions
How will hiring a doula affect my partner’s role during the birth?
The role of a doula is never to replace a support person, but to diversify and strengthen your support network. My role is to support you, and your partner. Together, we work to create a team that can be dynamically present to build a safe and easeful environment to keep you at the center of your birth story.
